Christians as Agents for the Healing of the World

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:17-18

Healing was a very important aspect of Jesus earthly ministry and the gospels are replete with various instances where Jesus healed the sick. In Acts 10:38, Apostle Peter introduced Jesus to Cornelius as a Man “who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him”. God is interested in our wellness and has commissioned us as agents for the healing of the world. But like Jesus Christ declared in the Scriptures, human faith is a factor in the work of healing.

The world today is plagued with strange and numerous diseases like Cancer, HIV, Alzheimer, Glaucoma and many others.  While through medical science, God has led many to discover cures or prevention mechanism for some of these diseases, we must, however, continue to depend on His grace for the total healing of the world from diseases. Where science is yet to discover a solution God has the solution if only we can believe. Jesus told the man in Mark 9:23 “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Many times there is the tendency to have the feeling that it is over with a situation we are in because the world has said so, especially when science is yet to provide a solution or the solution is unaffordable. But God is omniscient and He wants us to prosper in all things and be in health, just as our soul prospers (3 John 1:2). He has not given up on us and as such we should not give up on ourselves. Jesus Christ has given us authority over diseases (Mark 16:17-18) and we are healed by His wounds on the cross (Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24). All that is required from us is faith – believing that at the name of Jesus Christ every knee must bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. (Phil 2:10)

However, the authority Jesus has given to us over diseases and all other works of Satan, are not for us alone but for the healing of the world. In Matthew 10:7-8 He commissioned His disciples to “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. …”  Jesus thus extends His healing ministry to the rest of the world in partnership with us His disciples. And, in so doing, we are all reminded that we exist not for ourselves, but for the healing of the world.

My Dear friends, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to our Lord Jesus Christ and he has delegated that authority to you and to I, His believers (Matthew 28:18-20). This is part of our legal inheritance, but we must be obedient to His words and act on them by faith. Let us therefore go into this week with the resolve to exercise that authority and partner with our Lord Jesus Christ, through faith, for the healing of the world.
