WHICH PATH ARE YOU WALKING?
“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” I John 1:5-7 NKJV
No one really know how valuable light is until they experience darkness. The reason is that light dispels darkness and cannot be overcome by darkness. In other words, light is the only solution to darkness. God is light, and everything that is good in the world emanates from Him. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” The light is the evident emblem of the truth of God; darkness is the symbol of error. Light represents holiness; darkness is the appropriate figure for sin. Light represents knowledge, especially of spiritual things, since light reveals; darkness is the fit token of the ignorance under which the natural mind labors perpetually. Light serves to reveal contamination, but cannot be contaminated. Light can be shut out or covered, but it cannot be contained. Light is essential for life to exist. Just as Christ is the Living Word, He is also the Light of the World. The light of Christ is the constant measure for man’s spiritual condition.
In the above text, John knew those who professed Christ and yet continued to walk in darkness. Anyone in this group could not be called any other name but a liar. Because, It is impossible to walk in the Light and continue in darkness. Since God is light, it makes sense that a Christian cannot truly claim to have fellowship with God while living in darkness. John knew that sometimes people will say they are Christians while they are engaging in acts of disobedience. A Christian who says they are in fellowship with God (who is light) but are disobeying Him (walking in darkness) is lying both in their words and in their actions (1 John 2:4). Our walk in the light should lead us to life of Transformation. That is, we are transformed to the image of Christ, becoming more like Him. As we mature while walking in the Light, our fellowship with other believers grows. We share more in common with them than those of the world. Our desires become the same, which is to please God in all we do. We have laid aside the old man of sin, who longed for the darkness, and now walk in the Light.
Beloved, which path are you walking? There are two paths to walk – Path of darkness and that of light. Only the Path of light leads to God. Walking in the light means walking as Christ walked while here on earth – seeking to imitate His life style in all that we do. When we walk in the light, our paths become illuminated and purposeful. To walk in the light is to walk with God. To walk in the light is to walk according to God’s word. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet”. This walking must be constant, progressive. However, No unsaved person can thus walk – They are said to be dead, in darkness, disobedient. There may be darkness all around us but the light of Christ in us will always be shining. Walking in the light requires Grace and faith. Moses did not take chances when he had the opportunity to dialogue with God. He said “if you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.” The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. “Exodus 33: 13-14 NIV. Like Moses, we too must admit that we cannot please God without His help. May He grant us the grace to walk in the light in Jesus name.
